Today we look at the final showdown of the season between the AL champion New York Yankees versus the NL champion Pittsburgh Pirates
Regular Season:
Yankees: 100-62 1st in Ty Cobb Division
Winning a league best 100 games, the Bronx Bombers were brutally efficient on the mound and at the plate, sporting an impressive +200 run differential, they proved this year they can beat you in any way they want. Led by perennial MVP candidate Tony Zambrano, the Yankee offence has power and speed in multiple spots they do strike out more than average but with a lineup like this you can afford it, the pitching is a balanced All-Star staff, with 4 starters who could easily be #1 on some teams and a solid late game bullpen.
Pirates: 98-64 1st in Sandy Koufax Division
Tied for the NL lead with 98 wins, the Pirates pitched their way through the competition, giving up a SBL low 662 runs leaving them with a +150 run differential. Armando Torres proved after a sub par 2028 he wasn't done and won the Triple Crown, pacing the entire league (not just the NL) in wins, ERA and K's. The offence has the ability to create runs and they get a lot of hits, but lack the power bats at times to turn those hits into runs.
Playoffs
Yankees: Swept Los Angeles in 3 games tossing aside the hard hitting Angels in the Division Series, then they defeated the red hot Mariners 4-2 in the ALCS to set up the clash with the Pirates
Pirates: Won a tight 3-2 series against the surprising Rockies, then denied the Cardinals another World Series appearance winning 4-2
Top Players
Yankees:
1B Tony Zambrano (.324/.388/.643 59 HR 156 RBI 6.1 WAR) - This guy is a beast, all he does is hit, he has Triple Crown potential and can change games with his bat.
LHP Salvador Rivera (20-3 2.76 ERA 142k 5.2 WAR) - Cy Young candidate, not a huge strikeout pitcher but he is a proven winner and doesnt give up many baserunners.
Pirates:
RF George Hull (.327/.411/.576 34 HR 107 RBI 4.6 WAR) - Best Pirates hitter, hits for a high average with solid power, gets on base and doesnt strike out a ton, All Star hitter.
LHP Armando Torres (20-7 1.92 ERA 216k 8.2 WAR) - Hands down the best pitcher in the league, lefties might as well just take the out and save the energy of walking to and from the dugout, and righties dont fare much better. He goes deep in to games and can fireball it past the best hitters to get out of his own jams.
Keys To The Series
Yankees: Break open games, the Yankees have a decided advantage in slugfests, while they have a solid pitching staff themselves getting runs early and often forcing the Pirates to play catchup
Pirates: Armando Torres, it will remain to be seen if GM Marcus Osborn tries to pitch Torres on short rest to give him 3 starts if the series goes 7, but either way they need to win the games he starts, they may have a solid staff, but the Yankees can tee off on even the best pitchers, if they can get to Torres what chance does the rest of the staff stand.
Best of luck to both teams.
