The tears, champagne and beer are flowing in the visitor clubhouse at Coors field. We join the pirates as they celebrate their first playoff trip since 2018. It has been a crazy year for the buckos. So much optimisim to start the season. Then another seemingly poor showing to the dog days of summer. The team being blown up with high profile players like Edmond Elliot, gold glove short stop Kenny Cooper and fan favorite Ben Collier being traded before the deadline. But then a funny thing started happening at PNC park. The Pirates started to WIN. So instead of continuing the spiral GM/Manager Osborn started pulling strings on his team to see if he could squeeze some magic from this group. And magic is exactly what he got. Going 19-12 down the stretch the Pirates were able to steal the Tony Gwynn division title.
When reached for comment Osborn was overcome: "We just never quit. We didn't always have the best team on the field on paper, but these guys are great guys...We.. just..." Armando Torres and Leonard McCullough just poured beer all over him and me... "Man these two they literally carried us to the title. Them and Old Man Strength."
Who's Old Man Strength?
"Eli! Eli! (Suero) What's your new name?" ... "Abeulo Fuerte!" They all laugh hysterically.
The pirates do not appear to be set to go very far into the playoffs. But they have two dominant pitchers they can hand the ball to. Sometimes in the playoffs that's all you need. Maybe their luck will hang around a bit longer. Sometimes the hard part in baseball is just getting TO the playoffs. Once there, anything can happen.
Osborn finished with this, "It's been almost ten years since this team has been to the playoffs. And I've never been myself. I'm going to enjoy this. After all the heartbreak and the gut punches. This is what it's about. These grown ass men, acting like little boys. I'm going to enjoy this!"
